Situated a short distance from Durham is the village of Brandon in County Durham, originally one of seven townships within the Parish of Brancepeth. Brandon was confiscated by Elizabeth I in 1569 after the northern rising and administered the lands as Crown Lands until the 1620’s where they were plundered by a series of Royal lessees and courtiers. In 1629 they were conveyed to the City of London when Charles I was forced to redeem his debts where they were subsequently broken up in a series of sales to merchants and financiers who in turn resold at high profits.
