The village of Bosham lies on an irregular peninsula jutting out into Chichester Harbour, it is a dead end between two creeks, at the tip is Quay Meadow. Shore Road runs alongside the water and is liable to flood at high tide, with the High Street set back running parallel to it. It was from the Quay that Harold set off on his ill-fated trip to see William of Normandy in 1064, Harold's father, Earl Godwin, had his main base here and, like Harold, is purported to be buried in the area and King Cnut probably had a palace in Bosham.
