The small North Yorkshire town of Boroughbridge, a few miles north of Knaresborough, is these days bypassed by the Great North Road, or in modern terms the A1(M), but it was for centuries a great coaching town on the route between London and Edinburgh. The River Ure is generally easily fordable at this point, and so the town is a natural crossing point of the river, but there was a timber bridge from Norman times to ensure the trade and communications route stayed open when the river fed by the hills of Wensleydale was in full spate.
