Bootle is a suburb of the City of Culture for 2008, Liverpool and today to look at it you would think that it has always existed in the shadow of its main city. You would though be wrong because Bootle boasts an interesting history that once saw this town as a seaside resort! Mentioned in the Domesday Book, Bootle was a small village overlooking the clear waters of Bootle Bay and it was these clear waters that first attracted industry to the area. Initially bleaching, tanning and papermaking were all established and thriving in the area and it was a popular resort until the 1800’s.
