Prior to the Norman Conquest this was known as Belesoure but today is better known as Bolsover, lying on the County of Derbyshire and today famed for its castle which is open to the public. Originally built in the 12th century the castle was later purchased by one of the most astute businesswomen of the 16th century, “Bess of Hardwick†who subsequently sold it on to Charles Cavendish who is responsible for much of what is to be seen today despite being ravaged during the Civil War. There is still evidence today of the hundred years of coal mining that took place here, including a superb model village for the miners arranged around a large attractive green.
