The traditional town by the River Ouzel that is to the southwest of Milton Keynes, retaining its own identity, is Bletchley. It grew up originally under the Normans but expansion really happened when the railway arrived in 1870. The vibrant new town of Milton Keynes has much to offer (including accommodation) but so does Bletchley, with the river and the Grand Union Canal (forming part of National Cycle Network) providing scenic towpaths, the Windmill Hill Golf Course (18-hole, par 73), the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve, the Brunel shopping centre, bustling High Street and plenty of parking.
