Near Gateshead and approximatey 5 miles from Newcastle in north east England, lies the town of Blaydon, or Blaydon-on-Tyne. The town is the origin of the well known traditional song ‘Blaydon Races’, written by George ‘Geordie’ Ridley in 1862 depicting the chaotic journey from Newcastle to Blaydon and its annual races. Regarded by many as the unofficial anthem of Tyneside, it has also been adopted by supporters of Newcastle United Football Club. A traditional mining town, Blaydon barely existed in 1760 but in the latter part of the century a smelting works was set up and from then on, with its strategic location on the Tyne and on the Gateshead to Hexham road, its industrial growth was assured.
