Belsay is a small village in Northumberland, north west of Ponteland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in north east England. It is situated on the A696. Edward II granted the manor of Belsay to Scottish nobleman and doctor John de Strivelyn. Upon his death, title of the manor passed to his daughter, wife of Sir John Middleton in whose family it since remained. Belsay Castle, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade I Listed Building managed by English Heritage, was constructed around 1370 as a three-story rectangular pele tower with rounded turrets and battlements.
