The small market town of Bellingham, in a parish of the same name, lies within the deanery of Corbridge, 16 miles northwest of Hexham and 25 miles west of Morpeth in Northumberland in north east England. The town is sited on the north bank of the river Tyne and is said to have been sited on a Roman station, of which there is much evidence of Roman remains in the area. Traditionally, the town is known as belonging to the Lords of Barons of Bellingham who had a castle at Hall field. The Anglican parish church of St Cuthbert was consecrated in 1180 and it roof is unique in that it is perhaps the only one of its kind left in England to be covered in stone, a response to the repeated burnings of the wooden roof by the border raids.
