The Pembrokeshire village of Begelly today, which even combined with neighbouring Kilgetty could only muster 2001 souls in the 2001 census, gives few clues as to its distant industrial past: at one time there were so many coal workings here that it is said carriages refused to travel through the area for fear of subsidence. The last of its mines closed in 1860, and where once ran rail tracks carrying coal from Begelly and Thomas Chapel to ships at Saundersfoot is now in part a nature walk – birders will find snipe, kestrels and sedge-warblers here.
