The historic market town of Bedale can be dated back to Saxon times – there is evidence of the incorporation of elements of the 9th century church in the current medieval building – and possibly back to Roman times. Just a couple of miles to the west of the A1, Bedale is a great place to stop en route, and a better one to spend a few days in, exploring the town and its surroundings – it sits between the Dales National Park to the west and North York Moors to the east. Granted its market charter by Henry III in 1251, Bedale retains a Tuesday market to this day, with the ancient market cross looking on still.
