Situated only two miles to the east of Gloucester, Barnwood managed to retain its rural character until the late 19th century. The village of Barnwood had developed along Ermin Street, the old Roman Road that linked Gloucester with Oxford and London. The village developed along the Street and by the late 18th century there were about 35 houses in the main part of Barnwood, many with their own small orchards and small holdings. There was an ale house, the Salutation, which closed in 1817 and another that had closed by 1807; the village blacksmith ran a beer shop in the 1850`s!!! Development in the mid 19th century saw many of the older dwellings replaced by houses and villas.
