Barnstaple on the river Taw is the largest town in North Devon, North of Dartmoor and West of Exmoor and close to some pleasant beaches at Saunton and Woolacombe. Barnstaple is a thriving market town which once was an important port town, especially among American traders. Two of its oldest features are a Norman mound and fragments of a Norman castle wall. Other points of interest include Queen Anne’s Walk and a 13th Century Long Bridge. From Barnstaple visitors can explore Tarka country and join the 180 mile Tarka Trail.
