Ballater is a small ancient town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland situated in Royal Deeside, lying on the River Dee, 43 miles west of Aberdeen. Behind the town to the north, runs the Pass of Ballater, an ice-worn ravine; where there is evidence the area has been a prehistoric settlement with a large collection of Pictish symbol stones. The town dates back to c1300 and was built around the central church green, the buildings are made from red granite, there are shops and amenities, a museum, hotels and restaurants, the Town Hall was built as a memorial to Prince Albert and the Royal Bridge, spanning the River Dee, was opened in 1885 by Queen Victoria.
