Baldock is situated in the very north of Hertfordshire, where the River Ivel rises and near the A1M. With a population of under 10,000 it is a small town but with much to offer. Originally the site of both Iron Age and Roman settlements, important in the stagecoach era as it was the first main stopping place on the Great North Road when heading out of London. These factors strongly influenced the town and still exist today in making a pleasant town, retaining many 16th to 18th century buildings, including St Mary’s church tower (the rest of the building is 13th century).
