Mention the name "Badminton" and the majority of people will think of either horses or, an indoor racket game, for both are connected with one Britain's great country estates centred on Badminton House. The Horse trials were first run in 1949; and the game of Badminton was developed in the early 20th century for house guests on rainy days. The house stands on the site of Badminton Castle the home of the Boteler family, the original manor house was brought from the Botelers in 1608. The present House was built by the first Duke of Beaufort in 1682 in the Palladian style with later additions by William Kent, it contains many fine features including some fine carving by Grinling Gibbons.
