In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty two miles south east of Cromer lies Aylmerton, a village sheltering in a little valley, surrounded by woods and open fields in countryside that gives the lie to Noel Coward’s “very flat, Norfolkâ€. There is evidence of Stone Age habitation and a Roman camp on the National Trust heath land close to the village. The fifteenth century church of St John the Baptist stands on the slope to the north of the village. With architecture typical of Norfolk’s medieval churches, St John’s has a round tower said to be 700 years old.
