Auchterarder is a popular tourist resort and is well known as the location of The Gleneagles Hotel, there are a variety of other holiday accommodations in the area. Auchterarder is a historical village dating back to the 13th century, when it was founded by Gilbert, Earl of Strathearn. The ruined Castle is though to have been established by Malcolm Canmore (1058-93) as a Hunting Lodge. The whole settlement was destroyed in 1715 by Jacobite soldiers.
