Originally known simply as Ashton nestling on the banks of the River Tame it was in medieval times a thriving market town and remained so until the 18th century. This town, like many in the North West of England at this time relied on coal mining lying as it does in the South Lancashire Coal Field. Ashton further developed as a cotton producing town using locally produced coal fired engines instead of steam power in some of their mills. By 1811 there were three canals servicing Ashton and it was around this time that there was some confusion with the number of places called Ashton.
