Ashington is situated in the county of Northumberland in north-east England. There is currently debate as to whether it should be described as a town or village but if the latter were the case it would be the largest village in England. During the 1840’s, when the Duke of Portland built houses to encourage workers escaping from the potato famine to come and work at the local collieries he was founding, Ashington grew from a small hamlet into a successful small mining town and during the peak coal mining period it was considered by many to be the “world’s largest coal-mining villageâ€.
