Arisaig is a village in the Highlands of Scotland on the west coast, lying south of Mallaig, looking over to the Inner Hebrides and Isle of Skye. Arisig was inhabited by monks during the 12th century although there were no roads built in the area until the 19th century. Arisaig was an area affected by the Highland Clearances in the 1800’s, where people were evicted from their lands to make way for sheep, the people of Arisaig were moved to Nova Scotia, there are remains of their homes around the area Arisaig is known as ‘the Gateway to the Small Isles’ these include Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna.
