Situated on the northern edge of the Romney Marshes, Appledore is a civil parish and village in the Ashford District in Kent, 12 miles west of Ashford. At one time, Appledore was a port on the estuary of the river Rother but after severe storms in the 12th century, the river changed its course. After fighting King Alfred and his army for five years, the Danes invaded Appledore using the sea creeks linking the English Channel. Alred the Great is believed to have built a fort at Newenden and then defeated the Danes.
