At the mouth of the Coquet river in mid-Northumberland, on the North Sea coast, lies the town of Amble, nine miles south of Alnwick and a mile southeast of Warkworth. The town was built upon a peninsula, providing extensive views of the surrounding coastline. The name is thought to have derived from Annebelle, an Old English term meaning ‘Anna’s Promontory.’ Roman coins and ancient Briton foundations have been found in the area surrounding Amble, suggesting occupation at different times during its history.
