On the Northumberland coast of the North Sea at the estuary of the Aln river, just over four miles southeast of Alnwick, lies the historic village of Alnmouth. Supposedly established by de Vesci, owner of Alnwick Castle in 1150, the Normans laid out the town and it quickly prospered to the extent that it was, in 1207, granted a charter for a port and a market and it quickly became recognized as the most important medieval seaport between the Tyne and the Tweed. Despite over 300 years of border raids, the village prospered and during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it reached its pinnacle.
