Alloway is a historic village in South Ayrshire in Scotland situated on the River Doon, 2 miles south of Ayr. The village grew around the original church dating back to c1200, replaced by the Auld Kirk in 1516, although a nearby holy well associated with St Mungo suggests the area would have been inhabited even earlier. Alloway is famous as the birthplace of Scotland’s National Bard; Robert Burns (1759-96) Visitor attractions include Burns’ Birthplace Cottage and Museum which stands in Alloway’s main street with its thatched roof, displays, letters and manuscripts.
