Approximately nine miles south west of Hexham lies the small market town of Allendale, which serves the Allendale valley. Part of the Hexham estate, it was sold to Sir William Blackett of Wallington, Northumberland, in 1689 by Sir John Fenwick. Sir William had become mayor of Newcastle and was created a baron in 1684, serving as an MP. On the death of his only son, also William, in 1728 the estate passed to his nephew, Walter Calverley, son of Sir William Calverley of Yorkshire, with the proviso that Walter marry William’s illegitimate daughter Elizabeth Ord and adopt the Blackett surname.
