Mentioned in the Domesday Book the town of Aldershot has a long history much of it associated with the British Army. It was around the mid 19th century that Aldershot was first chosen as a location for the British Army, and virtually overnight the sleepy village of Aldershot became the thriving hub of the British Army. The army took over large areas of land in and around Aldershot and the military community started to grow at a phenomenal rate. How great a change can be seen in the population statistics for the area, in 1851 the population was recorded as being at around 870 and by 1861 the population was in excess of 16,000.
