Aberfoyle may be a sleepy Stirlingshire village with a modest population of about 700, but it is regularly invaded by visitors looking to explore the Tolkien-esque scenery of the Trossachs. Less than an hour along the A81 from Glasgow, yet a million miles away from the bustle of the city, it is Aberfoyle that is considered the gateway to the lochs and forests of the Trossachs. The secret majesty of the area was revealed by Sir Walter Scott, whose 1810 poem, The Lady Of The Lake, featured the Lake Of Monteith, Scotland’s only lake.
