The name Poulton le Fylde is derived from the River Wyre situated at the bottom of the Breck. Poulton means “farmstead by a pool†and “le Fylde†was added in 1842 as the introduction of the penny post meant that letters sent to Poulton were often mis-directed to Poulton le Sands – to ease confusion the “le Fylde†was added. Poulton le Fylde’s history goes back further for in the Harris Museum in Preston there is the skeleton of an elk that was found in 1970 and that dated back some 12,000 years – what was interesting was the discovery of hunting barbs in the leg bones indicating that it had been hunted and so the area must have been inhabited around 10,000 BC.
