The Lakes District (or just 'The Lakes' or 'Lakeland') in Cumbria is England's largest and highest National Park and, apart from being a great place to holiday, has literary associations with Wordsworth (born near Cockermouth & lived in Grasmere) and, of course, Beatrix Potter who lived near Ambleside. Windermere has to be the most famous of the Lakeland towns bordering the famous and largest natural lake in England. Not surprisingly, water sports, boat trips and other water based activities are popular here, as well as the fantastic walking to be had in the Lakeland Fells.
