This North Somerset village can trace its history back beyond Roman times and may have been inhabited when a nearby Iron Age hill fort was constructed on Cadbury Hill. The remains of a Roman villa, a temple and a coin horde have been excavated in the area suggesting its development continued throughout the Roman occupation. The village is graced by a large Anglican church, St. Mary's. Built in the 14th century it is often called the Cathedral of the Moors because of the way it dwarfs the village.
