The small town of Yarm in North Yorkshire provides a lovely demonstration of how some new ideas take, and some don’t. As all right thinking people should know, the modern world began in Yarm, as it was in a pub here – The George and Dragon in the High Street – that the decision was made on February 12 1821 to request Parliamentary permission to build the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which was the first in the world. Also in the town stands the stone bridge built in 1270, whereas the metal one constructed in 1805 to replace it only lasted a year.
