Wroxham is often called the capital of the Broads, and for good reason: there are probably more boats for hire here and better shopping facilities than in any of Norfolk’s other little towns and villages dedicated to the holiday trade. What we refer to as Wroxham is actually two settlements either side of the wide river Bure, these days joined by a graceful modern footbridge: on the south bank is Wroxham, the north Hoveton. In Victorian times the Roy brothers opened a shop here to cater for holidaymakers drawn by its nearby Broad, and the company dominates retail trade in the district, though there are plenty of other outlets including nearby Wroxham Barns, a renowned craft centre.
