Wootton Courtenay lies entirely within the Exmoor National Park in the West Somerset district of Somerset. The main residential area lies below the hillside of Wootton Common. The parish of Wootton Courtenay contains the hamlets of Huntscott, Brockwell and Ford. The village is small, with a population of less than 300 at the last census. In the Domesday Book it was simply recorded as Otone, meaning settlement by the wood. Courtenay was added to the village name in the 13th century when the Courtenay family became owners of the manor there.
