The east-London district of Wapping was historically connected with sailing and, then, with docks and warehouses built in the 19th Century. Falling into disrepair after World War II, it was revitalised as part of Docklands in the 1980s. It hit the headlines in 1986 when Rupert Murdock moved in with News International, triggering huge protests as thousands of print workers were made redundant. Wapping - located on the north side of the Thames between Tower Bridge and Shadwell - is now best known for its colourful blend of the old and the contemporary.
