Wallsend is a town located on the north bank of the river Tyne in north east England, close to Newcastle upon Tyne and across the river from Jarrow to which it is linked by the Tyne Tunnel. Situated at the southern end of Hadian’s Wall, the wall built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian to keep out troublesome Scots, it was literally where the wall ended. The excavated remains of the garrison fort of Segedunum can be seen at ground level. This fort was in use for around 300 years with an estimated population of around 600 men in 250AD.
