The area of Underskiddaw, as the name would logically imply, lies at the foot of Skiddaw, the fourth highest peak in England at 3054 feet. Just a few minutes by car along the A591 from Keswick, taking in the villages of Millbeck and Little Crossthwaite, and you are there, with the forests and mountain of Skiddaw to the north and east, Bassenthwaite Lake no distance away to the west, and lush farmland separating the two. If a change from walking in the wilds is needed, then Mire House is well worth a visit, though the gardens, heather maze and woodland playgrounds will keep you rooted in the natural world.
