Tintern, (formerly Tintern Parva and Chapel Hill) lies six miles N of Chepstow on the A466 to Monmouth. It is perhaps best known as the site of the ruined C12th Cistercian Abbey, whose splendour is immortalised in William Wordsworth’s famous poem. However, the Abbey ruins, whilst magnificent are not the only reason to visit this lovely part of the Wye Valley - designated a conservation area of outstanding natural beauty. There is something for everyone here. Walkers will want to cross the wooden bridge to the north of the Abbey to visit the “Devil’s Pulpit†where Lucifer supposedly tried to lure the congregation away from the Abbey below Antique collectors will love the treasures to be found in the many shops as will lovers of antiquarian books.
