Lying to the north of Junction 28 of the M1 in Derbyshire is the village of Tibshelf, lying close to the Peak District National Park. Tracing its history back to Anglo Saxon Times the village has enjoyed a varied history that has included mining and quarrying as well as being a location for medicinal springs and oil exploration. It was here in Tibshelf that the country’s first inland oilwell was sunk, today though a history of its short life can be found at the appropriately named Oilwell and Nursery Garden Centre on Chesterfield Road, the site of this former oilwell.
