Though the ancient market town of Thorne near Doncaster very definitely lies on the Yorkshire side of the border with Lincolnshire, there is something about the countryside which is more reminiscent of the latter county. The Don just to the west and the Stainforth and Keadby Canal running through it in part explain that feeling, as do lift-bridges you’ll see there; the flatness of most of the landscape likewise. Even the parish church of St Nicholas would be at home in the fens. With a population of more than 16,000 Thorne has good local facilities, and there can be few places in the country easier to get to: the town has railway stations both north and south; sits in the canal network which once transported coal from its pits; is a short drive from Robin Hood Airport; and has the M18 on its western edge and the M180 along its southern.
