Sturminster Newton is a charming small market town on the south-eastern side of the Blackmore Vale. It is a traditional Dorset town, developed to cater for the needs of local agriculture. Situated on the River Stour, it is half way between Blandford Forum and Sherborne. The town was originally situated at the historic fording point of the River Stour, which was replaced by a stone bridge in the 16th century. The bridge still stands today. The economy of the area is dominated by dairy agriculture. The town hosts an annual cheese festival and in 2007 this festival attracted over 11,000 visitors! There is a weekly market, held on Mondays.
