It is said that the town of Stone gained its name from a marker for the graves of he sons of King Wulfhere who had his two sons killed because of their conversion to Christianity. Nestling alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal in the heart of Staffordshire this old market town can trace its history back to medieval times. Today the present Church of St Michael, erected in the mid 18th century, is said to be on the site of a priory first established here in 1135. In 1251 the town of Stone gained its charter under Henry III to hold a market – a tradition which still holds true today.
