Elegant Stokesley lies alongside the River Leven, close to the foot of the Cleveland Hills. Although an ancient town with a market charter dating from 1223, Stokesley appears to have been almost completely rebuilt during the early 18th Century. The town has a distinguished wide cobbled main street lined with Georgian and Regency buildings, with open spaces at either end.
The River Leven runs just behind the main street and is crossed by the Pack Horse Bridge, dating from the 17th Century and once the only crossing into the town.
