Seven miles to the east of York lies the town of Stamford Bridge. There has been a settlement here, and perhaps more significantly a crossing over the river Derwent, since at least Roman times. As an important crossing point the town will have provided hospitality for many centuries, and still has four pubs to this day. The old stone bridge that now spans the river dates from 1727, and is a grade II listed building. In medieval times there was a wooden bridge, and of course there was a bridge at Stamford Bridge in 1066 when the battle just before that at Hastings took place there.
