The market town of Spalding is situated in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire. It has a population of about 22,000 and lies next to the River Welland. Every year the town hosts the very popular Spalding Flower Parade, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008. The tulip parade is a celebration of the local flower industry and it attracts a large number of visitors each year. The origins of settlement in Spalding dates back at least to Roman times, when the Spalding Marshes were used for salt production.
