The village of Rudgwick lies close to the Surrey border in the Low Weald country 6 miles (10km) west of Horsham. The name is derived from the Old English - hryer = ridge & wic = farm. Rudgwick was a farming and woodland community until the 13th century (it is not mentioned in the Domesday Book) when a church was built and the foundations of the village were formed. The present church - Holy Trinity - sits on the top of a rise and dates mainly from the 14th century, the south wall of the nave is probably Norman and the sturdy, buttressed tower is C13th, but the building was re-done in the C14th with a north aisle and new chancel.
