Rossendale is an area to be found in the North West of England in the County of Lancahsire. Rossendale is a borough consisitng of around 70,000 people resident in a number of small towns, the major towns being Bacup, Haslingden, Rawtenstall and Whitworth. Records show that the area has been known as Rossendale for over 1000 years however the Borough has only existed since 1974. The River Irwell runs through Rossendale, its source is to be found above Bacup, along the valley and on towards Manchester, the highest point in Rossendale is Top of Leach – around 1500 feet above sea level on the Mary Towneley Loop – a circular loop on the Pennine Bridleway National Trail.
