Prestonpans is a historic village in East Lothian in Scotland situated on the south-coast of the Firth of Forth, 2 miles east of Musselburgh, 8 miles east of Edinburgh. 12th century monks from Newbattle Abbey had the land and founded the salt-pans giving the village its name Preston (priest-town) (salt) pans. Prestonpans was created a burgh in 1552; the main industries were coal-mining and salt panning. Famous as the site of a major battle in Scottish History, the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745, when the Jacobites took control of most of Scotland by vanquishing the Hanoverian army (government troops); the battle-site is marked by a cairn.
