If Birkenhead was the “engine room†of the Wirral then Prenton was where the wealthy resided. To be found close to the top of the Wirral Peninsula on a hill overlooking Birkenhead and The River Mersey this is where the people with money resided. In Anglo Saxon times much of the area was scrub and woodland until the Middle Ages. The development of the Wirral for residential use, and in particular Prenton, is closely linked to the improved transport connections with Liverpool. Most important in the development of this part of the Wirral was the inauguration of the Mersey Tunnel which gave access to the important Port of Liverpool.
