Penbryn, 9 miles north of Cardigan in Ceredigion, is possibly the most beautiful beach in Wales. Nearly a mile long, owned by the National Trust, it is completely unspoilt. To access it, park your car at Llanborth farm and walk about 400 metres. (For those with limited mobility there is a turning circle at the beach itself.) Penbryn has always been a place of secrets – from its reputation as a smuggler’s haven in the C17th to legends of the flat rock at the end of the beach called Carreg Morwynion (Maidens rock) as a remembrance to several girls who, it is recorded in the C19th , mysteriously drowned here.
